As always, it was great to chat to Alderman Felicity Purchase during our monthly “Community Catch-up” on the Drive Zone.
Felicity was the Councillor for Ward 69 and is now the Proportional Representative for Sub-council 19. She was also the Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and the Urban Development Authority for the City of Cape Town but vacated that position when she was elected as the Speaker of The City of Cape Town council in May 2021.
She was born in the South Peninsula and matriculated from Fish Hoek High School in 1975. She studied through UNISA and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce (Economics, Accounting, Law). She also obtained various certificates including Conflict Management, Problem Solving and Economic Consideration in Spatial Planning and Travel Management.
She started her political career in 1995 at the Fish Hoek Transitional Municipal Council and held the position of Deputy Mayor at the South Peninsula Municipality from 1996 to 2000. The establishment of the Unicity in 2000 incorporated all the previous administrations and Ald Purchase was awarded Aldermanship. The City of Cape Town council elected her as the Speaker of The City of Cape Town council in May 2021.
